A premier steel fabrication and erection company based in Brooklyn, NY, with over 40 years of experience in the Tristate Area, is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Lead Estimator to lead its Estimating Department. Specializing in structural steel fabrication, erection services, stud welding, and custom stairs and railings, this firm utilizes advanced technology including CNC machinery, Peddinghaus PCD-1100, and Tekla software to deliver high-quality projects across commercial, industrial, and residential sectors. With an annual production capacity exceeding 1,000 tons, the company values precision, innovation, and strong client relationships.
The Lead Estimator plays a critical role in overseeing all aspects of the estimation process for structural steel projects—ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and alignment with project goals. This position involves managing specification reviews, cost analysis, scheduling, and risk assessments, while serving as a key liaison between clients, subcontractors, vendors, and senior leadership. It requires a strategic thinker with strong analytical skills and deep knowledge of structural steel processes.
Responsibilities
- Cost Estimation: Determine material, equipment, utilities, and labor costs for diverse structural steel projects, preparing accurate quantity take-offs and materials pricing to ensure competitive bids.
- Bid Analysis: Compare, organize, and analyze competitive subcontractor and supplier bids to identify the most cost-effective and reliable options.
- Bid Submission: Ensure all relevant documents, budgets, and estimates are completed and submitted accurately before bid deadlines.
- Estimate Review: Collaborate with the project management team to review quotes and estimates, ensuring alignment with project requirements and budgets.
- Pre-Construction Coordination: Conduct pre-construction meetings with clients, subcontractors, and material vendors to align expectations and streamline project kickoff.
- Scheduling: Partner with the Project Manager to create and maintain detailed schedules for subcontractors and vendors, ensuring timely project execution.
- Risk Management: Formulate contingency plans and proactively manage risks that could impact cost and time estimates, mitigating potential challenges.
- Client and Team Communication: Act as the primary company interface between clients and upper management, fostering strong communication with all stakeholders, including clients, subcontractors, and the project team.
- Client Presentations: Present estimates to clients, discussing potential savings and value engineering opportunities to optimize project outcomes.
- Project Optimization: Provide management with solutions to meet project goals, including setting work hours, sequencing tasks, sourcing materials, and securing favorable vendor and subcontractor agreements.
- Budget and Change Order Management: Work closely with the Project Manager to communicate with clients regarding project budgets, costs, and change orders, ensuring transparency and agreement.
- Vendor and Subcontractor Network Growth: Actively build and expand the company’s subcontractor and vendor base to enhance project efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in structural steel estimation, with a proven track record of delivering accurate and competitive bids.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of building and structural steel processes, including fabrication and erection techniques.
- Analytical Skills: Exceptional math and analytical abilities with a keen eye for detail to ensure precision in cost estimation and bid analysis.
- Plan Interpretation: Proficient in reading and interpreting structural steel plans and specifications to develop accurate take-offs and estimates.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong interpersonal abilities to build relationships with clients, subcontractors, and team members. A strong command of the English language is essential.
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced computer skills, with high proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and experience using estimating software, preferably PlanSwift and Bluebeam.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field is preferred but not required with equivalent experience.
- Work Ethic: Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.
Compensation
- Job Type: Full-time
- Pay: $70,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
