The Director of Business Development is a full-time, exempt leadership position based in Ohio, requiring statewide travel and reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This pivotal role drives strategic growth initiatives to increase patient census, strengthen referral networks, build partnerships with healthcare providers, and expand market share across our outpatient behavioral health programs. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of behavioral health services, Ohio’s payer systems, and the evolving healthcare landscape, combined with exceptional communication, networking, and strategic planning skills to advance our mission of transforming lives through accessible, high-quality care.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Growth & Planning: Develop and execute business development strategies aligned with organizational mission and goals, identifying new market opportunities for partnerships, service line expansions, and geographic growth. Analyze market trends, competitor activities, and service gaps to inform decision-making and maintain a competitive edge.
  • Referral Network Development: Cultivate and manage robust relationships with hospitals, primary care providers, mental health professionals, schools, justice systems, and other key referral sources. Represent the organization at industry conferences, networking events, and community forums to enhance visibility and establish thought leadership.
  • Census & Revenue Optimization: Monitor and drive referral conversions to meet census targets across PHP, IOP, and outpatient levels of care. Collaborate with clinical and administrative teams to optimize payer mix and ensure alignment with value-based care initiatives for financial sustainability.
  • Marketing & Outreach Oversight: Oversee the development and distribution of marketing materials and campaigns to promote services. Coordinate community outreach efforts to raise mental health awareness and improve access to care, ensuring all initiatives reflect our commitment to quality and compassion.
  • Team Management & Growth: Recruit, onboard, train, and supervise the business development team across multiple Ohio regions. Set clear performance expectations, develop individualized growth plans, and conduct regular supervision, coaching, and evaluations to foster a results-driven, mission-aligned team culture. Identify professional development opportunities to enhance team expertise.
  • Data Tracking & Reporting: Maintain dashboards and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate progress toward growth objectives, including referral volume and revenue impact. Provide regular, data-driven updates to executive leadership on business development activities and trends, leveraging Salesforce or other CRM systems for accuracy and efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Required:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Marketing, Business, or a related field.
    • Minimum of 5 years of business development or marketing experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in behavioral health.
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience managing teams or direct reports.
    • Proven track record in relationship building, census development, and executing successful outreach strategies.
    • Strong knowledge of Ohio’s Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial payer systems.
    • Exceptional leadership, presentation, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to travel across Ohio as needed.
  • Preferred:
    • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
    • Familiarity with Ohio’s behavioral health licensing and regulatory environment.
    • Experience working with Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) and state agencies.
    • Proficiency in Salesforce, CRM systems, or referral tracking tools.

Compensation

  • Salary: $140,000 - $175,000 annually, based on experience.
