CPA – Tax Department Leader
Location: Cleveland, OH (In-Office)
Salary: $400,000 - $500,000
This is a rare opportunity for a highly educated, visionary CPA to lead and transform a firm's tax department. As the head of tax, you will oversee a team of 100 CPAs, set the strategic direction, and ensure tax services remain at the forefront of the industry. This role demands more than technical expertise—it requires a leader who can develop high-level tax strategies, mentor and upskill staff, and align tax operations with broader business objectives.
The ideal candidate will have a deep tax background and a business-driven mindset, but industry-specific experience is not required. Instead, we seek a professional with a strategic vision, leadership capabilities, and the ability to elevate the firm’s tax practice to new heights.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Strategy: Oversee the entire tax department, ensuring seamless execution of tax strategies across multiple industries, including real estate, healthcare, and manufacturing. Establish and execute a long-term vision for the department’s growth and efficiency.
- Team Development & Mentorship: Lead, train, and develop a team of 100 CPAs, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous learning. Implement training programs to enhance technical skills and business acumen.
- Tax Strategy & Compliance: Design and implement sophisticated tax planning strategies, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations. Identify opportunities for tax efficiency and risk mitigation.
- Process Improvement & Innovation: Introduce modern tax technologies and automation to optimize workflows. Develop and refine internal processes to maximize efficiency and client service.
- Client & Business Development: Act as a trusted advisor to high-level clients, offering strategic tax planning and financial guidance. Collaborate with firm leadership to attract new business and expand service offerings.
- Regulatory Awareness & Risk Management: Stay ahead of tax law changes, ensuring the firm remains at the forefront of regulatory compliance. Establish best practices for risk assessment and mitigation.
- Financial Performance & Growth: Work closely with executive leadership to set department goals, manage budgets, and drive revenue growth through strategic tax services.
Qualifications
- CPA certification required.
- Advanced degree in accounting, finance, or taxation from a top-tier university (MBA, JD, or LLM in Taxation preferred).
- 15+ years of experience in tax strategy, planning, and compliance.
- Proven track record of managing and leading large tax teams in a fast-paced, client-driven environment.
- Strong understanding of complex tax structures, including corporate, partnership, and high-net-worth individual taxation.
- Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and develop high-performing teams.
- Business-minded, with a strong grasp of financial strategy and firm profitability.
- Experience implementing tax technologies and automation tools is a plus.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary of $400,000 - $500,000, commensurate with experience.
